Creating a sense of place is just as important as developing a character. So say authors Amelia Kyazze and Nicole Swengley who drew on their respective experiences as a photographer working for humanitarian organisations and a journalist writing about art and design to create the backdrops in their recent fiction. 

In The Cafe on Manor Lane, Amelia's third novel set in 1950s London, an unlikely cafe sees the kindness of strangers hold people together, when the world feels as if it's falling apart. 

In Nicole's debut novel, The Portrait Girl, a contemporary jewellery designer is thrust into a dangerous world of re-enacted Victorian salons and gets much more than she bargained for while seeking the identity of an inherited, miniature portrait.
