Exploring the alternatives to traditional gap year experiences
About this Event
Offering tips for how one can make the most of their gap year when confronted with unprecedented changes.
Despite historically strongly rejecting the idea of taking a year out before university, Mika’s Results Day decision to go against that was the first surprise, of many, the year would bring. Unlike traditional gap years, her experiences followed an unfamiliar route - directed entirely by a bucket-list of jobs to complete rather than countries to visit.
With overseas travel and traditional gap year experiences no longer possible, this will be a session focused on moving away from the stereotypes and designing a year that suits you and your future plans.
About the speaker
Mika Alvarez Nishio graduated secondary school in the summer of 2019 after completing A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and History. Initially, she intended to study History at Durham University. However, by the end of her final year she decided this was not the correct path for her. Following a year shaped by UCAS, employment and travel (and something about a global pandemic), she will take up a place to study Archaeology and Anthropology at University of Oxford in October.
