The story of decimalisation in Britain.
On a grey, drizzly Monday, 15 February 1971, Britain went decimal. Ten years in the planning, 'D-Day' upended a currency system that had been unchanged for more than a millennium. A national effort requiring cooperation at every level of society, many expected decimalisation to be a disaster.
Tom Hockenhull, Curator of Medals and Modern Money at the British Museum, recounts the story of how it happened, its planning and implementation, of the challenges faced and of the key players who ensured its ultimate success.
A copy of Tom’s book (£15) is available from the British Museum here.
This is a free event although a donation of £5 is suggested which will go towards the School Enrichment project at Bell House..
