Miscarriage is the most common complication of pregnancy with 1 in 4 women experiencing at least one miscarriage during their reproductive lifetime. A miscarriage is the loss of a baby before 24 weeks of pregnancy.
Contrary to the widespread belief that early pregnancy is too soon to grieve a loss, or that only mothers feel bereft, medical research charity Tommy’s have found profound psychological effects on both parents. And yet, a woman currently has to go through 3 miscarriages before she is offered care or treatment.
Most of us will know someone who has been affected by miscarriage, and yet it is still largely a taboo. At this talk, we will discuss early, late and recurrent miscarriage with experts Hanine Fourie and Anna Nella, and explore some of the current areas of research and care pathways available.

Anna Nella is a bereavement specialist midwife, currently working at GSTT in London. She supports families who have been affected by baby loss due to late miscarriage, termination for medical reasons. stillbirth and neonatal death. Her work includes ongoing support postnatally as well as during subsequent pregnancies. She has worked as a midwife at Tommy’s for nearly a decade and is proud to be involved in a team invested in research to save babies’ lives and provide trusted pregnancy information.
