Dates: Mondays, from 2nd September to 21st October, 3-5pm

  • 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 September

  • 7, 14, 21 October

Are you thinking of writing a poetry collection or in the middle of doing so? Do you want to weave your individual poems into a cohesive whole? Would you gain from working with others to go even deeper into your creative practice? Facilitated by award-winning poet Jenny Mitchell, this poetry writing course will guide you through planning, drafting, and organising a collection.

You'll explore poetic devices, craft compelling poems and delve into challenging subjects. You’ll also make use of techniques for using dialogue and various points of view, along with experimenting with forms such as sestinas and pantoums. The course will emphasis the importance of revision, self-editing and peer feedback. By the end of 8 weeks, you'll have been offered clear insights into submitting work and entering competitions.

Jenny Mitchell won the Gregory O’Donoghue Prize 2022, and the Poetry Book Awards for her second collection, Map of a Plantation. Her prize-winning debut collection, Her Lost Language, is one of 44 Poetry Books for 2019 (Poetry Wales), and her latest collection, Resurrection of a Black Man, contains three prize-winning poems and is featured on the US podcast Poetry Unbound. Her poetic tribute to Benjamin Zephaniah, “The Day Mr Zephaniah Died”, is on the British Literature syllabus at the University of Connecticut.

She has performed at the Houses of Parliament, was Poet-in-residence at Sussex University in 2024, and has recently been appointed the British Library Inaugural Poet-in-the-Community, working with the Engagement Team. In June 2024 she won the Ink, Sweat and Tears Poem of the Month.

Registration costs £120 for the eight sessions.
