In July this year, we welcomed Year 6s from Elm Wood School to Bell House for our first ever school visit! Elm Wood pupils learned all about bees on a trip to our beehives, helped us make some beautiful quilts for premature babies at King’s Hospital, and brought the history of Bell House to life in our creative writing sessions.
This is the sixth and final episode in our weekly series Elm Wood Writes Bell House, showcasing the best of the poetry, diary- and story-writing from our time with the Year 6s. These are two of our favourite poems from the trip. We hope you’ve enjoyed Elm Wood Writes as much as we have!
I am the cobbles
I am the cobbles who heard it all,
I heard the people as they’d call,
‘Ring the bell, a fire’s here,
Hurry up, it’s getting near!’
*
I am the cobbles who saw it all,
Women in dresses standing tall,
With banners of white, purple and green,
‘Votes for women!’ they shouted keen.
*
I am the cobbles who felt it all,
The horses heavily clopping in time for the ball,
Men and women dressed smartly tonight,
Dancing on me till the morning light.

Once
Once there was a man who owned this place
Who had a very serious look on his face
When someone attempted to steal his coat
He would send them to America on a boat
Soon there was a fire
But he had no people to hire
So he made the bell go ‘ding-dong!’
So people would get water from a pond
Oh yeah, oh yeah, it’s time to be
At Bell House with the man Charlsey !
