Volunteer profile - Tina

Providing support to people with dyslexia is such an important component of Bell House’s work and we’re delighted that Tina, who is heavily involved in that area, has answered our questions this month. Get to know Tina a little better and hear about what we have planned for the rest of the year.

What is your focus as a volunteer?

I am part of the dyslexia steering group and run a six-week programme ‘Supporting Dyslexic Learners’. I also run shorter sessions for students preparing for university and have worked with some local schools helping students to prepare for exams.

How long have you been involved with Bell House?

Around 3 years.

What do you do away from Bell House?

You will either find me trekking through the woods or head-banging at a live music event. During lockdown, I took up yoga and can just about do eagle pose without falling over too many times!

What is your favourite thing to do in and around Dulwich?

Apart from spending time at Bell House, I love strolling to the nearest charity shops.

What do you think you bring to Bell House as a volunteer and what do you get out of it?

I am very interested in the way people learn and running the six-week course allows me to meet new people, both parents and practitioners, who give me insights into different strategies that can be used for all sorts of learning. I often get really good tips that I am keen to share with learners… they’re especially good when they come directly from a dyslexic learner as they usually work!!! Plus, the team at Bell House has a great energy and it’s wonderful to work with like-minded people.

What is the best project or event you’ve been involved with at Bell House?

The Dyslexia Fair [watch this space!] is always a highlight as it keeps me up to date with the latest teachings, tools and technology to support learners on their journey. It also gives me a chance to meet some of the participants from the courses that I have run and to find out how their lives have progressed since taking part

What are you working on now?

I’ve got the ‘Preparing for University’ session coming up at the end of June. This will look at how to keep organised, take notes and use some of the technology that can help with essay writing.

Are there any forthcoming projects, events or initiatives that you are particularly excited about?

As mentioned before, I’m really looking forward to the fair in September. I’ll also be running my ‘Supporting Dyslexic Learners’ course again in person(!) in October. Whilst it was lovely to work with people from all over the country on Zoom, I much prefer the vibe of face to face teaching as it allows more flexibility and engagement… it’s definitely a lot noisier!!!!
