BOOKBINDING: COPTIC BINDING WORKSHOP
EXPERIENCE LEVEL – NONE
Would you like to have go at bookbinding?
This session starts at 10.00am and ends at 4.30 pm. There is a chance of over-running so please allow some extra time at the end of the day.
Come and close February in our Print Room & Bindery.
Tania will introduce you to the fundamentals of Coptic binding.
This taster session is designed to introduce you to Coptic binding which was used by early Christians in Egypt (The Copts) as early as the 2nd century. This is an exposed stitch style of binding using chain and link stitches to bind several sections of a book and the covers together. These make great sketch books as they open flat. At this workshop you will take home two Coptic bound books; one soft and one hard cover, not bad for one day!
This workshop is ideally suited to anyone who has had a little experience of bookbinding but anyone who can thread a needle and handle a craft knife and is a keen crafter will be able to follow the day’s task. If you have some experience then all the better!
All materials and equipment supplied. Tania will have ready prepared all the materials you need, trimmed to size for an efficient speed of working. *
This session is designed to equip you with skills that you can build on at future workshops and work on at home.
These workshops are held in the Bell House Print Room and Bindery where we will be using materials and equipment kindly donated to us from Dulwich College and The London Library. Space is limited so book fast. These are probably the smallest book binding classes ever! ONLY 3 places available for lots of one-to-one focus time.
You will most definitely be needing a break so either bring along a sarnie or we can refuel on some biccies for half an hour.
Cost including all materials £60
ALL MATERIALS INCLUDED – NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED
*PLEASE NOTE this workshop is unsuitable for under 16s and sharp equipment is used.
PLEASE BRING AN EXTRA LAYER AS THE PRINT ROOM MAY GET CHILLY.
The workshop will be run by the Creative Director of the Print Room & Bindery – Tania Hurt-Newton.
